My family went on a trip last summer to visit my grandma in Lewiston, Maine, for her eighty-eighth birthday. We loaded up all of our gear, her presents, and even the family dog and started on our way. It only took a few hours to get there and, luckily, we arrived just in time for her party – despite the many pit stops we had had to make. Grandma was as cheery as ever and rushed out to greet us, dragging my aunt, uncle, grandpa, and cousins along with her. It was a wonderful celebration, accompanied very quickly by cake. As we were sitting around talking, my mom suggested that grandma open her presents. Leaping at the opportunity, she raced across the room with the youthful vigor of somebody my age, and tore into the packages. I had always loved that about grandma: if it weren’t for her wrinkles, you’d have never known she was as old as she was. She acted like a kid in so many ways and enjoyed life more than any other person I had ever met. But anyway, she got to her last gift and let out an excited squeal when she saw what was inside it. A new IPHONE. It had been my idea. I thought she needed something to help her keep up with the times – and, evidently, she liked it. She whipped it out, flipped through a few screens, and to my surprise started taking pictures of everyone with the phone. For an old woman, she sure knew her way around technology. We were all laughing as she took photos and even shot a few videos. She even went outside to add some scenery to the pictures. I saw the dog running, just then, and tried to yell out a warning but it was already too late. The dog jumped up, intent on greeting Grandma and sharing her excitement, and knocked the poor lady over! Everyone rushed to help but she swore she was okay. Bruised… but okay. The IPHONE, on the other hand, hadn’t survived as completely. There was a huge crack right down the middle of the screen. When Grandma saw this, she started chasing the dog with fury. My dad tried to calm her down, telling her things would be okay. The IPHONE could be fixed.
