My family owns a big cat refuge here in Addison, Alabama. We take in all kinds of big cats – tigers, lions, cougars, leopards, bobcats, etc. – and rescue them from circuses, ignorant owners, and even – on occasion – zoos. I’ve always loved working there with the animals. Even though it’s dangerous (you should watch what they do to their dinner!), it’s also very rewarding. I remember, as a gift for helping them so often, my parents bought me my very own IPHONE. It was awesome! I loved that thing and spent all day with it. I took it with me into the cats’ pens and took pictures of them playing. I recorded videos of them and sent it to my friends. I even started uploading some films to the internet. It really was cool. There was one time, however, with a big tiger, that I learned some cats can be as camera-shy as people. I was just taking a few pictures when the IPHONE began to ring. A friend of mine was calling and the ring tone agitated the cat. Hercules – the cat – jumped up and started charging me. I yelped as he tackled me, throwing himself at the phone and mauling the screen with his powerful jaws. I was stepped on and even scratched (or should I say ‘slashed’?) as he tried desperately to kill my phone. I was yelling for help, unable to get out from under the feline when my dad came charging in. He was armed with the water hose, but it did little to deter the big Hercules. Finally, after stepping on me one last time, Hercules decided that the IPHONE was officially dead. He backed onto his haunches, observing my dad as he rushed forward and pulled me to my feet. Hercules hadn’t been attacking me on purpose. He had been trying to save me from the phone, attacking it while unwittingly crushing me beneath his weight. When I picked up my phone, I realized the screen had been damaged seemingly beyond repair. My dad told me he knew of an IPHONE repair place where he got an IPOD fix that specialized in Apple IPHONE LCD replacements and IPOD display, though, so we packaged the phone and mailed it off. I got it back inside a week later and was surprised to find it as good as new. There wasn’t a mark or a scratch on it – unlike myself. Hopefully I never have another incident with a big cat and my IPHONE – I’ve since stopped taking it into the cage with me – but I’ll never stop loving my big cats. Hercules and I, at least in my opinion, are closer than ever. Yes, he hurt me… but it was only because he was trying to save me from “the evil IPHONE”. And for the record, my pictures came out great!
